Dr Irfan Kuroz

On 21 Mar 2006 a patient went to the Liverpool Medical Centre just before 9 o'clock in the morning with chest pains described as "acute". Even with the help of an ECG, Dr Kuroz decided she didn't have any problems with her heart at all and was only suffering from a benign inflammation of the chest cartilage, and, after prescribing her medication accordingly, sent her on her way. Within half an hour she was dead - from heart problems.
As far as we can tell, Dr Kuroz continued working at the Liverpool Medical Centre for perhaps another two or three years as though nothing had happened - we base this on the fact that MQ&A rang this centre on 2 Dec 2010, and was told that Dr Kuroz hadn't worked there for "two years".
On 31 Mar 2009, a complaint was made against Dr Kuroz - we are not told by whom or to whom, and as to why it was made 3 years and 10 days after Dr Kuroz's misdiagnosis.
On 25 Nov 2009, a hearing was held into Dr Kuroz's conduct in this matter by the NSW Professional Standards Committee.
On 15 Dec 2009, a decision was made about Dr Kuroz's conduct by the Professional Standards Committee, he was found guilty of unsatisfactory professional conduct. And, wait for it - he was reprimanded! Whoopee!
On 11 Jan 2010, there was a press release by the NSW Health Care Complaints Commission outlining what had happened and saying that details of the full decision were available on the website of the NSW Medical Board - since the 1 Jul 2010 the Medical Council of NSW.
On 16 Jul 2010, according to the Australian Health Practioner Regulation Agency, (AHPRA) Dr Kuroz was suspended - there is no information as to whether this was becasue of the misdiagnosis incident described above or because of some other problem, nor when the suspension might be lifted, if it could ever be lifted.
